DRILLS

A single-speed drill is only useful for light work like drilling holes in wood.

A cordless drill eliminates the need for cumbersome extension cords and can be used where power is not available.

Two or three speed drills can be used for light or heavy work especially if they have a hammer action. More versatile drills can be fitted with sanding or other attachments

When using a two-speed drill allow to stop before changing speed.

Frequently check the air filters on tools. Clogged filters can choke an engine and many filters can be cleaned and reused

When using a drill apply steady pressure in line with the axis of the drill. Too little pressure can cause excessive friction at the tip of the drill. Sideways pressure can cause the drill bit to snap inside the hole.

When drilling ensure that the work is secured firmly to avoid damage to either it or the drill.

Unplug the drill before fitting parts or changing bits and always remove the chuck key before switching it on.

Power leads to the machine should be kept short. If long, never allow them to trail on the floor, they should be slung from the ceiling.

Use both hands to guide and hold the drill and always wear goggles to avoid danger from splinters.

To avoid damaging the drill when drilling masonry, withdraw the tip every five seconds to stop it overheating. Or squirt water into the hole.

When drilling hard metal put a drop of turpentine or vinegar on the drill bit for lubrication.

When drilling thin or soft metal, place it between two pieces of wood. Drill through the wood and metal to stop rough edges or bent metal.
